Walking

The area offers a variety of walks to suit all abilities, from easy strolls along the shore of Loch Lomond on on marked paths and trails of the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. Keen hill walkers can tackle the ascent of Ben Lomond, one of Scotland's favourite ‘Munros’.

Cycling

Cycling offers another excellent way to make the most of out wonderful countryside. There are many back roads and forest tracks for cyclists to avoid traffic. The Glasgow / Loch Lomond / Killin Cycle route link Drymen to Balloch and Glasgow in the south and Aberfoyle and Trossachs north. Cycles can be hired in Drymen, our local village.

Loch cruising and water themed activities

There is no better way to enjoy the wonders of Loch Lomond than to take to the water on a small boat like the local post man out of Balmaha on his round of the beautiful islands. There is plenty of space for sailing, water skiing and canoeing.

If your interest is ski-ing, we can help with boat registration with the Park Authorities and give you the benefit of our knowledge of the islands and waters of the loch. This is beneficial to boating people that come due to the restrictions on Windermere and Ulswater.

Blair Drummon Safari and Adventure Park brings you more for less than you might expect. Wild animal reserve, pets farm, giant astraglide, adventure playground where you can dig for treasure, picnic and barbecue area, bird of prey centre. There is also an amusement arcade, face painting and watering hole.

Maid of the Loch Maid of the Loch is the last major paddle steamer built in Britain and has been identified as meriting inclusion in the National Register of Historic Vessels. The steamer is at present being restored, with a view to sailing on Loch Lomond again. She can be viewed at Balloch Pier at the southern end of Loch Lomond.

Loch Katrine Loch Katrine is the perfect place to visit and view all aspects of the beautiful scenery and splendour of Scotland's first national Park, from either on the water or from the shore. Here you can discover more about the nature and fascinating history of the surrounding area. The steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing on these water for over a century allowing today's visitor the opportunity to experience a bygone age which inspired the poet Sir Walter Scott to write 'The Lady of the Lake'.

Golf

Buchanan Castle golf Club in Drymen offers an 18 hole parkland course. Strathendrick and Aberfoyle offers a steep course and Balfron now offers an 18 hole course. All are open to visitors.

The Scottish Open is held in July at Rossdhu House in Luss, is always popular and you'll need to book early.

Places of interest

The Falkirk Wheel The Falkirk Wheel is the world's first and only rotating boatlift. It's like nothing else on earth. Basically it's a rotating arm with gondolas at either end. It turns like the sails of a windmill and lifts or lowers boats in the gondolas from one level to another joining two canals.

Scottish Antiques The biggest selection of antiques gifts and collectables under one roof and a nice cafe restaurant. With over 40,000 sq.ft of space you will find everything from library bookcases to wine coolers and pine kists to dining room tables.

Glengoyne Distillery The famous Glengoyne Distillery is local to Loaninghead. You can take a tour of their facilities and sample one of Scotland's most popular single malt distilleries. Sample tastings and interesting historical tours are available every day in season. Craft and gift shop open all summer.

Fishing

Loch Lomond offers possibly the widest variety of fish in Scotland. Species range from Salmon and sea trout to pike, roach and chub. Visit Balmaha Boat Yard for information and boat hire (5 miles away). For better quality fishing however, Lake of Menteith is 10 miles East. Trout fishing is especially popular here. And if you don't catch one, you'll be impressed by the ospreys as they easily catch their prey!

Stirling

Visitors to Stirling should make a point of visiting the Wallace Monument, depicted in the recent film Braveheart. An impressive tower recalling Scotland's greatest freedom fighter, Sir William Wallace.

Old Town Jail is a victorian jail where living history actors invite you on a tour of the jail which was built in 1846.

Stirling Castle is a must and a favourite royal residence of many of the Stuart monarchs. Much of the Castle seen today including the Palace, Chapel Royal and Great Parliament Hall have magnificent renaissance architecture. It was influenced by the French Mary of Guise, mother of Mary Queen of Scots. Also in the castle is the regimental museum of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Glasgow

Glasgow is within easy reach and a major attraction for visitors is the Burrell Collection. The gallery is within Pollok Country Park and while you are there Pollok House is also well worth a visit. Motorists entering the city will find it well sign posted. Glasgow is rich in museums and galleries, parks including Strathclyde and Mugdock country park plus other places of interest.

Glasgow Science Centre boasts three new attractions offering interactive fun and exploration. The Science Mall Imax theatre and the Glasgow Tower rising 127m into the Clydeside sky while the Glasgow tower is the highest free standing structure in Scotland.

Why not try using the hop-on hop-off bus service that allows you to visit all the main tourist attractions in the city. You can get off the bus at any location and rejoin the bus to move on to your next destination. This service has become very popular with foreign visitors.
